Stuart Denture Clinic in Calgary: Surgical Dentures
At Stuart Denture Clinic in Calgary, we offer surgical denture services for our patients. Surgical dentures are placed on a patient’s gums following the extraction of the natural teeth. There are 2 options when it comes to surgical dentures. The first option is immediate dentures. With this type of denture, they are fabricated before the natural teeth are extracted and placed upon the gums immediately following the surgery. They act a little bit like a Band-Aid in the sense that they will help to reduce the bleeding following surgery. With this type of denture, more adjustments will be needed.
The second option is to wait until your gums have fully healed following extraction surgery, which takes approximately 8 - 12 weeks. Following the healing period, impressions will be taken and the dentures will be fabricated. One of the advantages of waiting is that you will be able to have a “try-in” appointment where you will get to try the dentures in wax to see how the teeth will look.
The fastest bone loss occurs during the first 6 - 9 months following extraction surgery. Temporary liners are placed to help the denture fit better during this time. After the 6 - 9 month period, a reline is required to refit the denture. At this time, we will take new impressions and replace all the acrylic to match the gums after the changes have occurred.
